This position is a member of a Safety Team that supports the work activities of employees and contractors working in a major petroleum refinery. The team plays a role in implementing Operational Excellence and ensuring regulatory compliance while working to support an Incident and Injury-Free environment.

Responsibilities for this Richmond Refinery position may include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as refinery-wide champion in the implementation of Occupational Hygiene Operational Excellence process.

  • Serve as self-motivated and pro-active technical resource for industrial hygiene issues (Chevron Operational Excellence process, Cal/OSHA compliance, other health issues, etc.) with strong writing & documentation skills.

  • Able to establish priorities and balance long term work with daily needs (agency inspections, etc.) while keeping poise and professional demeanor.

  • Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring, surveys, and statistical data interpretation. Present findings to field personnel and management. Incumbent should be highly knowledgeable with technical aspects of industrial hygiene (acute and chronic chemical health effects, statistical use of data, methods of sample collection, data integrity, indoor air quality, radiation program management etc.).

  • Interpret Laws/Regulations or Policies/Best Practices, determine applicability & develop compliance guidelines and provide practical solutions for field implementation. Audit refinery performance against requirements and recommend practical corrective actions. Able to make decisions independently.

  • Energize others to perform HES tasks with diligence and attention to detail. Engage employees and contractors to provide guidance on Industrial Hygiene issues and PPE requirements.

  • Conduct training or outreach activity with Refinery personnel. May lead or facilitate investigations of incidents.

  • Respond to internal or community monitoring events with established practices (Occasional on-call duty for 24/7 coverage).

  • Be able to seek continual improvement in work processes and think strategically.

  • Understand and apply Chevron's Tenets of Operation.

  • Ability to work as team member on HES issues with peers, management and line field personnel- building good and productive relationships.

  • Demonstrated communication skills (including concise articulation of messages) and strong presentation skills, both oral and written.

  • Participation in compliance audits and inspections.

  • Facilitate and/or participate in incident investigations.

  • Manage Safe Work Practices and programs such as ventilation systems, reproductive hazards, respiratory protection program, hearing conservation program, benzene, hydrogen sulfide, mercury safety, etc.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Science in related field (e.g. Occupational Health & Safety, Chemistry, etc.)

  • Minimum of 2+ years experience in Industrial Hygiene.

  • Demonstrated experience with Federal and California OSHA regulations and industry health & safety standards and agencies that support the programs described above.

  • Demonstrated occupational hygiene and HES related technical knowledge, experience, and academic background.

  • Strong working knowledge of Federal and California OSHA, EPA, ANSI, ACGIH, and NIOSH.

  • Experienced at interpreting regulations and industry standards including ANSI to implement work practices.

  • Demonstrated strong experience assessing workplace exposure hazards, conducting health risk assessments, recommending exposure controls and supporting workgroup Operating Procedures and Hazard Analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience reviewing design and operational plans for new and modified equipment, for identification of exposure and other health concerns.

  • Demonstrated Incident and Near Loss investigation experience and ability to identify trends in incident data.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and deploying safe work practices and HES training.

  • Must be able to manage small to moderately complex projects.

  • Be able to seek continual improvement in work processes and think strategically.

  • Excellent written/verbal communications and facilitation skillset and experience writing Occupational Hygiene monitoring results reports and other occupational hygiene-related client communications

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, can work effectively with a diverse group of people, have a positive approach, and establish trust with fellow employees.

  • Demonstrated time management and prioritization abilities.

  • Domestic travel of less than 10% can be expected. Overseas travel is not anticipated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degre in a Science discipline, Engineering or Public Health.

  • Current certification or the ability to achieve the following certifications: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

  • Demonstrated understanding of Chevron’s Exposure Standards and Biomedical Surveillance Programs and Chevron’s Operational Excellence Management System including experience implementing OE processes.

  • 3 years related experience in an oil and gas operating environment.

  • Experience working with a unionized workforce.
