Supporting the Cross Asset Solutions (“CAS”) Management Team, and reporting to the Managing Director & Head of Strategy & Business Management, this diverse role is responsible for a high level of financial, strategic, analytical and operational support. The role requires an individual who has superior analytical capabilities grounded in strong quantitative judgment, is an effective communicator, works as a team player, and possesses the highest level of integrity. The candidate must be very adept at interpersonal dynamics in managing matters that are both sensitive and confidential.
This role includes accountabilities for supporting, anticipating and managing both short and long term objectives/outcomes and maintaining a current understanding of CAS specific strategies and performance objectives. Role also requires liaising with key internal stakeholders including the support of CAS management’s communication efforts (internal and external presentations, OSFI, industrial relations, media relations and public relations).
This position supports the implementation of key programs and/or initiatives, while establishing and developing strong relationships at all levels across the organization to support the effective execution on the businesses’ mandate.
Knowledge & Skills required:
Graduate degree with a focus on Business, Economics, Finance/Accounting, preferably a Master in Business Administration or CFA designation
Minimum 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in Capital Markets of a Global Financial Institution, with at least five years of managing increasingly complex projects in a technical environment.
Highly developed analytical and conceptual skills with ability to analyze data, develop key insights & provide business recommendations
Possesses strong interpersonal skills including but not limited to: collaboration, facilitating consensus, resolution management including managing complex and sensitive issues
Confident in providing strategic insight and advice to senior executives
Highly organized with a proven ability to manage critical complex projects across many different functional lines with varying levels of urgency, sensitivity and importance
Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances
Specific experience in the area of strategy and financial modeling. Proven experience working on and successfully delivering complex projects under time sensitive deadlines
Strong Microsoft Powerpoint skills and the ability to synthesize data, information and ideas into presentations
Strategy and Operational Support
Work with CAS leadership team to deliver CAS2.0 through implementation of a change management program within the structured products desk to ensure all current and future change initiatives (technology enhancements and operating structure enhancements) are properly socialized & supported, adequately resourced, pushed forward with timelines/milestones, and reported out to senior management with clarity around implications for financial and operational risks.
Through the annual planning process, collaborate with the CAS Management Team as required to plan/design line of business strategies in support of the overall business strategy
Plan/design and develop integrated reporting on CAS’s performance objectives (both financial and non-financial objectives) and strategic initiatives
Support the CAS Management Team to develop, articulate and implement strategic plans and initiatives on an ongoing basis; take the lead in analyzing and preparing business cases for new initiatives.
Update operating metrics and milestones including the identification of potential areas of opportunity
Identify, support and track key issues relating to both financial and operational metrics for BMO CM Operating Committee and Executive Committees as applicable including internal and corporate trackers
Lead/support special projects in partnership with the business management team for Global Markets
Drive reviews of strategic and business initiatives when issues and/or opportunities arise and provide recommendations on the optimal path forward
Drive all CAS Management Team and LoB Head communications (i.e.: town hall materials, client stories, speaking notes for executive presentations, etc.)
Perform analysis on varied topics that are strategically important to the business including market developments and competitive landscape and internal matters related to risk, compliance and Finance
Prepare all business presentations including ‘Deep-dives’ for the Senior Management, GMMC and Executive Committee updates and Board Communications
Provide key stakeholders enhanced clarity into the business’s targeted balance between earnings volatility and profitability, into the desired risk profile (across strikes), planned and potential risk mitigation, rationale such positioning, and related risk/reward trade-off considerations
Drive the development of additional tools necessary for traders and Market Risk managers to measure, monitor, and manage risks, potential losses, and their evolution across strikes accurately
Work with CAS Management Team to deliver a new risk recycling desk and map out how it would operate in conjunction with originations desks and how to impose transfer pricing rules that appropriately incentivizes risk taking and / or provides veto rights, as well as high quality advice to traders
Business Delivery and Execution
Acts as the first point of contact for strategic, financial, and operational issues for the business
Act as the first point of contact for internal and external audits and regulatory exams; address questions and issues as authorized and escalate as required
Identify issues, gaps and process improvements, address as authorized, and escalate as necessary
Interact with Risk Management to support the quarterly risk dashboard and risk control and assessment process
Develop a crisis playbook and work closely with Risk Management to align desk organization to risk strategy and enhance FO and Risk dialogue around global risk profile.
Conduct a more comprehensive risk identification process and work with GM modelling / technology group to develop live intraday risk capabilities
Interface with HR Business Partner for Global Markets on talent and performance management initiatives
Review materials that require the LoB Head’s approval or attention; perform additional analysis as and when necessary to provide thoughtful recommendations to the LoB Head related to the matter
Review and approve internal expenses based on guidelines agreed with the LoB Head; take initiative to find opportunities for better cost management
Represent the LoB on various forums and meetings as and when requested by the LoB Head
Liaise with internal stakeholders including back-office, middle-office and other partners to achieve operational efficiencies and support the design and implementation of new processes
Initiate and manage regular review meetings between Risk, Treasury and CAS to enhance FO and Risk dialogue around global risk profile
Financials and Metrics
Primary interface with Finance for day to day issues, including structural and financial integrity of management reporting, CAS forecasting, business commentary and informational requirements, and expenses management and analysis
Perform detailed financial analysis including profitability and productivity analysis
Initiate and drive regular periodic simulation exercises of the crisis playbook strategy under difference scenarios
Prepare monthly and quarterly business commentary and Performance Committee slides
Work closely with LoB to monitor PnL reserves to ensure they capture model and/or parameter uncertainties
Work with Finance and Risk to enhance PnL explain function and reporting of risks to GMOC and CMOC
Lead a culture of digging deeper into operational issues and promote cross-functional alignment on priorities, as well as a joint sense of ownership around driving implementation
Collaborate with structuring, sales and trading to create client pitch-books
Perform ad-hoc analysis for the LoB Head to support client meetings (including analysis on past deals with the client and opportunities for further collaboration)
Manage any client surveys from external providers and internal client audits
Review and analyze reporting available on client data, and provide recommendations for updates or changes as required
